Start with the routes and features you want to see after dark, such as paths, steps, trees, planting beds and seating areas. Use several carefully positioned lights to guide the eye through the space rather than trying to illuminate the entire garden with one powerful fitting.
Bollards and low path lights are useful beside walkways, while spike-mounted or adjustable fittings can sit within borders and direct light towards planting or architectural features. Choose the mounting style according to the ground surface and the effect you want to create.
Use shielded, diffused or downward-directed fittings and keep bright light sources away from seated eye level. Lower-output lights placed at intervals usually create a calmer and more balanced result than a small number of very bright fixtures.
The required IP rating depends on where the fitting will be installed and how exposed it is to rain, irrigation and standing water. Check the individual product specifications and choose a higher level of protection for open or highly exposed positions.
Warm white light, generally around 2700K–3000K, complements timber, brick and planting and creates a relaxed atmosphere. Neutral or cooler light can suit contemporary spaces or task-focused areas. Keep the colour temperature consistent across nearby fittings for a cohesive result.
Spacing depends on the fitting height, beam spread and brightness, so there is no single distance that suits every product. Position lights close enough to maintain visual guidance while allowing gentle areas of shadow, and test the layout before completing permanent installation.
Yes. A qualified electrician should install hardwired outdoor lighting and confirm that the cables, connections, earthing and weatherproof protection are suitable for the location. Solar fittings may be easier to position but should still follow the product instructions.
